Reading through some of the thousand articles already floating about the internet, and the actual emails and attachments, it’s pretty disheartening that some basic security rules weren’t being followed.

First off, password security should be priority in any network. Educating your users to secure and memorize their password (that means no yellow post its lying around with that info) should be the top concern for any sysadmin. Allowing a person to post their credentials in the footer of his email signature is horrifying, as one of the brainy scientist had done. Hmm, maybe that’s how the hacker got into your system in the first place? Just maybe so.

Second, if you write about deleting information that you’re afraid of being obtained through a freedom of information request, then don’t store that same information on an unsecure server. That’s just counterproductive now! You never know when a hacker will download all that info and, oh who knows, publish it for the world to see. It’s rare, but I hear it happens.

Finally, let your users know that everything they write, or say (voice mail) and do (teleconference, security videos) at work which is recorded is the property of the company, and may just find it’s way unto the front page of the NY Times. Do you really want that remark about your assistant advertised on the frontpage? Think twice about what you say and think thrice about what you document into written record.

What do you think about the fiasco of the Climatologist emails and the fallout that they are experiencing due to their bad security? ISC2 is going to have a field day in with this!

It may be one of the more simple ideas to come down the pike in awhile, but it may also prove to be extraordinarily helpful to solution providers in the channel.

NComputing has come up with a way to plug thin clients into a server via a Universal Serial Bus (USB), thereby eliminating the need to link thin clients to servers over Ethernet.

As desktop virtualization continues to gain momentum, many IT organizations only need a solution that allows them to connect a thin client to a server that is only a few feet away. And they need to be able to do it with as little complexity as possible.

Pricing for the model U170 is expected to be less than $99. NCcomputing thus far claims to have sold over 2 million thin client devices, which are becoming more popular in part because of desktop virtualization software and an increased desire of customers to deploy desktop devices that consume much less power than a traditional PC.

With the news that Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) is finally getting around to consolidating all of its various channels, there’s one new nugget in the AMD program that could really help make AMD partners more competitive.

As part of the AMD program, the company’s best partners will now gain early access to new and emerging AMD technologies. That program is likely to be of value because the industry as whole is on the cusp of a number of new innovations enabled by core processor technology. Those advances include:

Enhanced Visualization: With the arrival of Windows 7, business intelligence applications are going to take more advantage of the graphics capabilities to enable richer levels of analytics inside the application.

Virtualization: Performance of existing servers is starting to be compromised by memory-intensive virtual machine software. The next generation of processors from AMD have are optimized to support virtualization and include much more efficient memory architectures.

Green IT: As more organizations become increasingly concerned about the amount of power being consumed in the data center, the energy efficiency of the processors in the server is going to become a much bigger issue in terms of managing the total cost of the data center environment.

Multi-core Processors: The next generation of enterprise applications will be more modular, and in some cases based on parallel programming languages, that will for the first time completely leverage the inherent processing power of multi-core processors.

While the new AMD program is focused mainly on partners that build systems, solution providers that sell systems based on AMD technology can benefit from paying attention to AMD channel programs in order to get a better understanding where system architectures are going long before one of the system vendors gets around to sharing that same information.
